MegaSquirt EFI is NOT what it was 10, 5 or even 2 years ago. Because of the way this has grown and the vast number of options out there now, it can sometimes be a little overwhelming to determine which MegaSquirt EFI System is the best choice for your project. This page aims to fix that. Please read on.
It’s true that MegaSquirt Electronic Fuel Injection has it’s roots firmly bedded in the hardcore DIY (Do-It-Yourself) market, but what some people don’t realize is this is NOT the only way to run a MegaSquirt EFI system and get incredible performance out of your vehicle for minimal cost.
We’ve dramatically expanded upon what MegaSquirt EFI originally set out to be. With a VERY complete lineup of EFI Systems that for the Hardcore DIY EFI guy and fully assembled and ready to wire in ECUs for the racer or tuning shop that just wants something to wire in and control their engine. And more recently we’ve expanded our line of fully Plug And Play ECUs that are literally a 20 minute install for the experienced tech, and maybe an hour max for most novices. The MegaSquirtPNP systems just plug in and are ready to rock in minutes, with a complete base map to get the car running at the first turn of the key and are then ready for fine tuning to fit the vehicles unique modifications.
Bottom line — We’ve built MegaSquirt Engine Management Systems to cover a wide variety of enthusiasts’ budgetary and performance needs. From extremely affordable systems with fairly basic I/O and capabilities to some of our newer (and still affordable) systems that lack nothing in featureset compared to most anything else on the market, with full sequential fuel and ignition control for 8 cylinders or more, individual cylinder trims for fuel and ignition as well as tunable injector timing, tons of I/O to control all sorts of automotive and racecar gadgetry, etc.
There’s very little reason one could find to spend more on a high dollar system, and those that choose to are unlikely to find any more performance for the large number of additional dollars they’d spend trying.
You could break these systems down into three main categories:

- Fully Assembled Wire-In Standalone ECUs at an incredible price point.

1. Low Cost / Extremely Affordable DIY EFI Systems — Budget Racers / Hobbyists / Hardcore DIYers
Would you prefer to spend less money and not mind putting in a bit more work? Do you enjoy the satisfaction of working on your own car? If you love the pride that comes from knowing you built everything on the car, you can even get a kit to build your own ECU from a circuit board and bags of parts! These DIY EFI kits continue to be extremely good sellers and customers have some incredible results running these systems they built themselves!
If you don’t want to build your own ECU but aren’t afraid of a little internal tinkering you can also order a low priced, Assembled MegaSquirt 1, 2, or 3 ECU and if needed, do some minor soldering of additional components to add some ‘extra’ capabilities you want to run on your engine.
These approaches all share a common thread – they’ll take a bit of research to determine what you need and will require you to know your engine and ignition system well (or learn it, which isn’t a bad thing), so they’ll be a bit of a learning experience. Without a doubt though, when you put that effort into your system your results will be incredible and at the same time less expensive than pretty much any other engine management system option available.

2. Fully Assembled Wire-In Standalone ECUs – Want to get right to the installation! This is for you.
We offer a number of ready to wire-in Engine Management Systems that in many cases will work for you right out of the box. If do you need a feature that’s not available off the shelf, it’s easy to work with our sales department to special order an ECU with these specific modifications already installed and ready to wire up!
3. Pro Systems including MS3-Pro and MegaSquirtPNP Gen2 Plug And Play EMS – when ease of use and maximum performance is the only thing that will do…
When your time is money (or you just plain don’t have any time to spare), sometimes it’s worth paying a bit extra to make the installation go as smoothly as it possibly can. Maybe you don’t want to go through a list of options and specify what you want included with your ECU like you were ordering a pizza, and you definitely don’t want to have to open the case and solder anything in yourself! You want something you can just take out of the box and have it work. This might take the form of a universal wire in ECU that’s got all the inputs and outputs it needs to run a wide variety of applications when you wire it up, or it could be a plug and play system that plugs right in place of the existing ECU and is ready for you to start tuning.
