James ‘Doc’ McEntire Sets Record N.A. Pass In High Altitude

James ‘Doc’ McEntire’s 68 Camaro, See Red, holds quickest ET, fastest MPH, and quickest average ever by an all motor car recorded during a week long drag racing endurance event. There is rumor that SEERED will be seeking some mine shaft air Fall 2016 and dip into the 7 second zone.

Speed Week 2012 at Bonneville Speedway

SpeedWeek 2012 was amazing this year, with MegaSquirt EFI helping competitors getting two new records! (That we know of.)  One of which, to the best of my knowledge, also takes the record for the fastest MegaSquirt EFI powered car in the WORLD!

Lee Sicilio’s 1969 Dodge Daytona Charger takes the A/BGALT Record with an average of 273.514 mph!

New A/BGALT Record Holder and the Worlds Fastest MegaSquirt EFI controlled vehicle @ 283 mph! (exit speed)

lee_69_charger_daytona

Record with an average of 273.514 mph
Record with an average of 273.514 mph!

Lee runs a 498ci Barton Hemi with Twin 91mm Precision Turbos.  Controlling it all is our MegaSquirt-3 EMS controlling his fuel injection and ignition system sequentially.  He also runs a set of eight of our IGN-1A ignition coils, perfectly igniting that race fuel under boost for maximum power.  (Somewhere in the range of 2000whp!)

Here’s in-car video of Lee’s record qualifying pass.  When he backs the record up (the next morning) he picks up a little more speed with a bit more throttle.

A/BGALT Class = A is 500 cubic inches max engine class, BG = ‘Blown Gas’ or a gasoline engine with forced induction, in this case twin turbos.  ALT =  Altered class, which allows for minimal streamlining of a production body forward of the cowl.

Black Opel Racing takes the E/GMS World Record on the Bonneville Salt Flats at 208.974 mph!

After 11 years of hard work the Black Opel Racing team did it, finally broke the the 202 mph record held by Gail Philips from CA.  Frank Kinney ran a averaged speed of 209 over 2 days to set a new record and earn a coveted Red Hat from the 200 MPH Club.

black_opel_in_impoundfrank_kinney_black_opel_record_timeslip

Black Opel Racing runs a MegaSquirt-3 EMS controlling fuel and ignition on their land speed monster.  They’re a great bunch of guys, and I look forward to seeing each and every one of their drivers who have poured years into this car get their ‘red hat’ with it.

E/GMS Class = E is 260 cubic inches max engine class, G means it’s running gasoline, MS is for Modified Sports category, meaning a 2 seater with a production run of at least 500 cars.

Another team running MegaSquirt EFI we ran into on the salt….

The ‘Spirit of Orangevale’ team — Gary Cope, Dick Bertolucci, Bob Shafer, Donnie Hicks, Rick Fairchild, Paul Hedglin, and tuner/MS EFI Installer Ed Umland

spirit_of_orangevale

These guys are running this lakester in the F/BGL class, with a 2JZGTE Toyota Supra engine and MegaSquirt-2 EMS controlling it all.  They looked us up on the salt to consult with them a bit on a problem they were having which was quickly sorted out (dying alternator, not enough energy to light the mixture at high load).  They made a few 200+mph runs in the car this year but didn’t quite up the record, but they’ll be back!

F/BGL Class = F engine class is 183 cubic inches max, B means it ‘blown’ running some type of force induction (turbo in this case).  G means it’s running gasoline,  L means it’s a Lakester style vehicle (basically an open wheel streamliner).

PRI 2011 Highlights — NASCAR Sprint Cup Series 2012 EFI Engine!

Saw this at the PRI 2011 show and stopped by to ask a couple of questions and investigate a bit further.  We’ll be getting a closer look again when we film the EFI show for Chris Lafferty’s Motorsports TV as we plan to go into a Cup Car shop and do part of the segment there.

pri_2011_19

DIYAutoTune had a blast at PRI Show 2011!

It was great connecting with our customers, both current and new at the PRI Show 2011!

The turnout was great, and it was awesome to see the great response we got to our display, including the ‘20,000 RPM Death Machine’ which by show time we had spinning up as high as 21,400 RPM! By mid way through the show we backed that down to a bit over 18k, as we got tired of resetting the breaker ;).

Just about everybody that came by though stopped to take a look, and many stuck around to check it out closer and to ask questions. We had quite a few who made sure to tell us how good the display was, one that said we deserved a award, and another that said it was the best display at the show! This is quite humbling and at the same time exciting to us as we’ve really got a very small budget compared to ‘the other guys’, some of which had HUGE displays that cost them 10’s of thousands of dollars just for the space, and that much more for the buildout of the booth. In DIY style though, what we lacked in budget I think we made up for in creativity and hard work. Which, by the way, matches the MegaSquirt community’s (and DIY’s) outlook to a T, so that’s something to be proud of.

Click any image below for a larger view.

Walking around the show, it was somewhat rare to see crowds around the small 10×10 booths like ours, though the crowds in the above pics were not unusual at our booth.  We couldn’t have asked for a better response…

In other news, check out this 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup motor complete with a McLaren EFI system, looks good!  (They should’ve run MegaSquirt EFI though ;)

We’re laying plans to go back next year, we’d love for you to come down and visit!

PRI 2011: The DIYAutoTune ‘20,000 RPM Death Machine’

People couldn’t get enough of the Death Machine, a.k.a. the Mini-MegaBench, at PRI.  Those that were paying attention got a little extra chuckle out of the warning label ;)

dangerhighvoltage_warning

The display was built to grab attention of show-goers, and to illustrate the functionality of the MegaSquirt-3 EMS running a complete 8 cylinder sequential fuel injection and ignition system.  We could trigger the setup using a JimStim to simulate a running engine, or spin a 36-1 trigger wheel up to speeds as high as 21,400 RPM!  That turned some heads….

Here are a few pictures of our late night build sessions, followed by a video preview of the unit in action.  We’ve been referring to this as the ‘20,000 RPM Death Machine’ as well as the ‘Mini MegaBench’.  One of those names makes me grin a little more than the other ;).

The display worked very good at the show, despite having some minor problems consuming more power than was allotted to us, so we turned it down to about 18,000rpms, which was still plenty impressive and didn’t pop the breaker any more.

What:  The Annual MegaMeet is the opportunity to come and hang out with some of the major car geeks that make the MegaSquirt project happen.  Bowling and Grippo and several others who continue to make this project possible will be there to share the latest news on upcoming products and to talk tech.  We’ve had people travel from all over the US, come down from Canada, and from as far as the UK to be here and that’s likely to happen again this year.

So what do we really do?

Well, first there’s the opportunity to meet/greet much of the core team.  You’ll get a glimpse at upcoming hardware and get to hear all the skinny on it.  Tuning software as well.  Anything MegaSquirt related that’s in the works or coming together, it will likely be here and you’ll see it first.  So basically we gather around, geek out, ooo’s and aaa’s are heard, we check out each other’s rides, have some food, and generally just have a good time.

This year we’ll again be combining the event with the Classic MotorSports ‘Mitty’ at Road Atlanta.  The Mitty is 3 days of road racing on Road Atlanta’s 2.54 mile course, combined with onsite camping, live music Friday and Saturday night and free beer on Saturday night, etc.

In addition to three days of racing, the MegaSquirt Meet on Saturday, and the GRM Party Saturday night, we’ll be having a live band ‘Hang Overture’ out at the DIYAutoTune.com tent on Friday night so come hang out, bring a chilled beverage if you’d like, and enjoy some killer music.

MegaSquirt ‘MegaMeet 2009’

Annual MegaSquirt event Hosted by DIYAutoTune.com

Thanks to everyone that came out and for those that helped with the presentations and all for helping to make this a very successful meet.  In all we pretty easily had 120+ people out which is easily double that of any past meet, there was alot of new information shared (MS3!) and alot of cool people to chat with.  I think good times were had by all.

Just looking at tags in the parking lot and talking to people, we had people here from Georgia (of course), Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Maryland, Virginia, Michigan, and then from as far away as Canada and the U.K.!

We’ll have some videos up in due time, but in the meantime, here are the presentation powerpoint files, and some pics that we took.  Kyle (from 1320Video.com) will have some more pictures posted soon as well as all of the mountains of video he took.  We’ll update this page with that when it’s available.

Hosted by DIYAutoTune.com

When:  April 19th, 2008

Where:  DIYAutoTune.com’s home base in Suwanee, GA just North of Atlanta.  See detailed directions below.

What:  The Annual MegaMeet is the opportunity to come and hang out with all of the major car geeks that make the MegaSquirt project happen.  Just about everyone that’s played a major role in the project from early on, which of course includes Bowling and Grippo and most of the masses of contributors that have made this project possible.  If you can think of a name that you’ve heard, a firmware / tuning software / etc coder or contributor, or documentation person, or support guy, or just hardcore ‘when I bleed it MegaSquirts out of my body’ type of guys/gals they will very likely be there.  We’ve had people travel from as far as the UK to be here and that’s happening again this year I believe.

So what do we really do?

Well, you’ll get a glimpse at upcoming hardware and get to hear all the skinny on it.  Tuning software as well.  Anything MS related that’s in the works or coming together… it will likely be here and you’ll see it first.  So basically we gather around, geek out, ooo’s and aaa’s are heard, we check out each other’s rides, throw em’ on the dyno and see what they can do, have some food, have some more formal discussion times where upcoming hardware/software can be shown off and/or technical concepts can be discussed/explored, and generally just have a good time.

There is plenty of parking on-site, even with another event that is going on in the area.  Plenty of room to hang out here…

If we’re not there anymore, you’d probably already know it by the large crowd of guys/sometimes gals geeking out over some car in the hotel parking lot.  Actually, that’s likely to be happening even if we are still over at Applebees, so pick your poison…

APPLEBEES SUWANEE  —  8pm or so until sometime after that…

    • Dyno schedule will be 10am-3pm or so.  If you’re not signed up, you very likely won’t get a pull, so sign up!
