Description

Crank Position Sensor – Hall Effect tab mount

Hall effect crank position sensor (or camshaft position sensor, or wheelspeed, or driveshaft speed, anything that spins!). We’ve tested this with our 6.75″ and 8.25″ trigger wheels. We were able to get a rock solid reading at over 19,200 RPM, which is as fast as our test rig could spin the trigger wheel. Runs off 5 to 24 volts, and gives a nice square wave so there’s no variable voltage issues. Has a 12 inch long, 3 wire pigtail. Here’s what the wires do:

Installation Info:

  • Red – Supply voltage; connect to either VREF or 12 volt switched power.
  • White – Output signal. On a MegaSquirt V3.0 or V3.57, connects to pin 24. We just set our MegaSquirt up for the VR conditioner and it works great. V3.0 MicroSquirts can also accept this signal over their VR conditioner input, but older MicroSquirts will need to use the Hall effect input.
  • Black – Ground.

Using the current revision of our ECU wiring harnesses, you can just tee the red wire on this crank position sensor into the red harness wire, and the black and white wires connect to the respective black and white wires inside the shielded RPM input wire. Red to red, black to black, white to white – simple and easy to remember.

Specifications

  • Ideal uses
    • Crank Position Sensor
    • Cam Position Sensor
    • Wheelspeed Sensor
    • Driveshaft speed Sensor
  • Operating voltage: 4.75 to 24 volts
  • Maximum overvoltage and reverse voltage: +27 to -25 volts
  • Maximum output current: 20 mA
  • Maximum frequency: 15 kHz
  • Temperature range: -40 to +125 degrees C

Will I need to add a pullup to use this sensor?

  • No, this sensor has a voltage pullup already on the signal wire.

Questions & Answers

I bought this hall sensor so I can run ford edis 6 cylinder setup. The wiring diagram shows a two wire vr sensor. How do I wire this in or will it not work? If not is there a two wire vr sensor with these same dimensions? I bought a custom bracket and this sensor fits perfect.

We carry this sensor for use with the MegaSquirt family of ECUs. We have not confirmed if it will work with an EDIS module or OEM engine management. I would typically recommend using OEM sensors with OEM engine management; the sensors and controllers were often designed as a matched pair.

  2. I have a 7 3/4" balancer on my SBC, with your 8 1/4" trigger wheel that gives me a 1/4" for the sensor to see, will that work ? Will the sensor still work if its mounted in front of the trigger wheel ?

Yes, we picked this size especially to fit common large-diameter Chevy dampers.

The question on the sensor location is one I've seen fairly often. The sensor needs to be installed so it reads the edge of the wheel, perpendicular to the crank center line, instead of reading the face of the wheel, parallel to the crank center line.

  4. Would this sensor be able to replace my BMW M20 CPS (60-2). As the m20 is a VR sensor and sensitive could i use this hall sensor directly to MS - would it work?

It depends on what MegaSquirt version you are using. The MSPNP is not set up for a Hall effect sensor; some other variants can use this sensor no problem.

  6. Would you happen to know if this sensor will work with a BMW m52 crank (60-2) wheel?

We have not tested it, but the crank trigger on these cars appears to have the right dimensions.

We have not tested it, but the crank trigger on these cars appears to have the right dimensions. It is likely you will need to fabricate a separate bracket.

    Yes, it is built in.

  10. The orientation for my OEM crankshaft sensor mounting bolts are into the engine block right above crankshaft, there are two 10 mm bolts... looks like this product would work I would be able to swing it down with just enough Eric Gap clearance but crankshaft sensor teeth would line up to the side of the crankshaft sensor looks like it would be closer to the tip of the sensor but still on the side. Would this still work?

The teeth need to be centered over the small black circle on the end of this sensor for best results. I can't promise you will be able to get a reading if the teeth are not lined up as designed.

  12. hi, this sensor is replacement of a sensor VR ? for ecu megasquirt. i have problem with the sensor VR oem of the engine. and I want to put a hall effect, but I'm not sure if it will work with the original engine wheel of crankshaft. the car is subaru impreza 6/7, with sensors VR. thanks.

As long as the MegaSquirt is configured for the right input type and the trigger wheel teeth match the minimum recommended dimensions or larger (2.0 mm minimum trigger width, 2.0 mm minimum tooth / notch depth, and 2.0 mm minimum tooth / notch width measured along the diameter of the trigger wheel). Please measure your trigger wheel before ordering.
